Knights were loyal servants to the king. They fought for King and country. Also, knights were supposed to attach themselves to a lady. This lady--usually married-- would act as a mascot, for lack of better term, for the knight during a tournament. This lady gave the knight one more reason to fight. Today, their relationship would be seen as weird and absurd, but then, it was the norm.
The knights were the protection in the kingdom. They were the king's right hand men. They would follow him into battle, and would dine with him when the fight was over. The bond between Lord and Liege was unlike any other; it was un-breakable. Of course there were exceptions as in Lancelot's case.
Knights were to be servants of the people. They upheld, and followed directly, the code of chivalry.
The members of the Round Table were: King Arthur, Sir Galahad, Sir Lancelot, Sir Kay, Sir Gawain, Sir Bors de Ganis, Sir Geraint, Sir Lamorak, Sir Gareth, Sir Tristan, Sir Gaheris, Sir Percivale, Sir Bedivere
The Round Table is based off the same implications and ideals as the system of checks and balances in America's government. These systems try to keep all sides equal. The Round Table allowed all the king and his knights to have an equal say and input on the issues.
